Spring is commonly associated with a time of renewal – flowers going into bloom, lush new greenery, warm sunny days, and more. With the start of Spring, the start of a new skincare routine is necessary.

While most of us are unable to enjoy the full beauty of Oregon’s spring season due to shelter-in-place orders, our dermatologists at Dermatology Clinic P.C. believe this is not the time to be slacking on your skincare.

This is why our skincare experts are sharing with you five simple tips that you can follow from the comfort of your home to maintain acne-free, glowing skin for a better, more confident you.

1. Exfoliate

Winter is marked by dry weather. During this period of dryness, dead skin cells begin to pile up making your skin look flaky and dull.

With the warmer weather, you will be most likely showing more skin than usual. If you want to show off youthful, vibrant skin, you will need to add an exfoliator to your routine. Exfoliators work by getting rid of skin build-up to improve skin’s appearance and texture. They also reduce the chances of having an acne breakout and improve your skin’s ability to absorb skincare products.

If you want to really improve the look and feel of your skin, and go beyond simple at-home exfoliators, Dermatology Clinic P.C. recommends getting a chemical peel.

A chemical peel is when a specialist adds a solution to the desired skin area. After a few minutes, the solution begins to stimulate the separation of the dead, dry, top layer of skin from the fresh, healthier layer below. Once done, the specialist peels away the outer solution to reveal smoother, less wrinkled skin that promotes vitality and youth.

2. Apply sunscreen

Even though the majority of the Pacific Northwest’s weather is marked by cloudy, rainy days, we cannot stress the importance of applying sunscreen when you go outside no matter what the weather conditions are. In fact, up to 40% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate the clouds even on a completely cloudy day. If you want to maintain that healthy and youthful skin, sunscreen is a must.

When you go outside, apply a moisturizer that is at least 30 SPF or higher. Also, look for a sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. By doing so, you can decrease the risk of developing skin cancer and skin precancers along with preventing signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles, sagging, and dark spots.

3. Wear less makeup

Makeup directly affects your skin health which is why it’s important to use the right products for your skin. Heavy makeup can clog your pores and cause breakouts, especially with the increase in humidity.

For a lighter alternative, consider adding BB cream to your makeup routine. BB cream is a light cream formulated with antioxidants and other-skin perfecting ingredients. BB creams can brighten, hydrate, protect, and even out skin tone with an all-in-one formula. If you want to let your skin breathe, the cream can be used on its own. If the foundation is a must, don’t worry, the cream can be used as a glowy base underneath the foundation. Speaking of glowy, youthful skin, BB creams come with SPF protection, eliminating the extra step of applying sunscreen, which you might be forgetting in your current routine.

4. Add eye care to your skincare routine

The skin around your eyes is the most neglected area in common skincare routines – this is not surprising as it is hard to notice that this delicate skin is being damaged after being outside enjoying the sun.

Squinting is a common reflex when it’s bright out and you do not have a pair of sunglasses to cover your eyes. Squinting can cause the harmful UV rays of the sun to speed up the aging around your eyes.

A remedy for this is to add an eye cream or eye gel to your spring skincare routine. We recommend looking for an eye cream or eye gel that contains antioxidants and peptides. This duo acts as a skin building block that helps the skin remain resilient to aging factors.

5. Exercise

Exercise is essential to your health and well-being. You should also know that exercise is a great assist in maintaining excellent skin. By exercising, the blood flow and circulation throughout your face can help flush out toxins. You can think of it as a mini-facial because the sweat leads to the pores opening up as well, allowing them to expel dirt and oil. After you exercise, be sure to clean your skin as your face will be prone to blemishes and clogged pores.

With these five easy-to-follow tips, we hope that you can maintain and improve your skin health. If you need more skincare advice, please reach out to our wonderful dermatologists and staff here at Dermatology Clinic P.C – Oregon’s skincare experts for all your dermatology needs.
